Essentially, CCS is the process where CO2 emissions are captured from industrial and power generation processes. After the CO2 is captured it needs to be liquefied prior being transported by ship. At the destination the CO2 is injected into secure, long-term storage areas at the bottom of the sea.
For the near future carbon-intensive fossil fuels are still likely to supply a major part of the world's energy needs. Currently, CCS is really the only technology available today that allows fossil fuel use but without the associated environmental damage. Estimates suggest that around 90% of the CO2 emissions can be removed from the fossil fuel burning process.
